Coping with hair loss, using hair extensions

Updated: Feb 17, 2019

Experiencing hair loss can be a deeply uncomfortable experience. It can knock down your confidence, affect how you view yourself and interact with others. According to the NHS, Hair loss, known medically as alopecia, is common. And It's estimated, for that around 70% of women over the age of 70 experience female-pattern baldness – the most common type of hair loss, which is thought to be inherited. The NHS points out that no treatment is 100% effective. What works for some, may not work for others and where the treatment works, it may take some time regrow.

So, how do you deal with a hair loss situation? Natural instincts will be first to do some online research, and find out everything you can about the situation. Next, is to identify any treatments that exist and how you can access such treatment. In addition to taking these natural steps, the NHS recommends dealing with the psychological aspect of the experience - "If you've lost your hair, even temporarily, life will be easier if you can accept what's happened and learn to live with your altered appearance."

One of the ways NHS recommends for coping with hair loss, is to cover it up with weaves. This involves braiding your first, then sewing on hair extensions across the braided hair. The weight of the extension is evenly and naturally distributed along the strands of the braid, to prevent any strain on the hair. Where the hair is more sparse due to more aggressive hair loss, a wig cap is used to even out the sparse areas and safely sew on the extensions.

Hair extensions provide two key benefits for coping with hair loss. The immediate transformation of a full hair again, is a huge confidence boost. Then there is the repair and growth that happens naturally while the hair is locked-in and protected from the elements. It is important to use a skilled specialist, specialising in installing hair extensions particularly for women or girls experiencing hair loss. Such a specialist should be somebody you can trust with your hair for the short, medium to long term. Wefted Weaves has a decade of specialisation in installing weave extensions for hair loss.
